This is a repost from an entry in my old blog made in Sept 2017.
I’ve got a few Kindle devices and on my phone, I tend to prefer the Kindle application for reading books. But I do purchase books in different stores, including Google Books. Unfortunately, transferring a book from the Google Books store to the Kindle is not an obvious process. Since I’ve gone through it a number of times, the last being a few minutes ago, I’m going to jot it down here for myself and anyone else faced with a similar situation.
Step 1: Download the ACSM file
- Go to https://books.google.com/
- Click on “My library”
- Click on the book you want to download
- Click on the Gear/Settings icon and select Download EPUB
- Download the file, which will have an “.acsm” extension
Step 2: Convert to EPUB
- Download and install the “Adobe Digital Editions” application.
- Add the downloaded ACSM file to it. When adding the file, the application will ask you to log in with an Adobe ID. If you don’t have one, you can create the ID/account for free.
- Once the ACSM file is added, the application automatically creates an EPUB file out of it. You can locate the EPUB file in a location similar to this: “C:\Users\_your_username_\Documents\My Digital Editions”
Step 3: Remove DRM
- Download and install the “Calibre” application. This is a fantastic, free book management app.
- Download and install the DeDRM plugin for Calibre
- Download the plugin from https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/ and unzip it.
- In Calibre, go to Preferences > Plugins > Load plugin from file
- Select the zip file in the DeDRM_calibre_plugin folder
- Click “Apply” and then restart Calibre (restarting is important!)
- Add/drag into Calibre the EPUB file from Step 2. This will automatically trigger the DeDRM plugin and remove the DRM.
Step 4: Convert
- Calibre is able to convert books to many different formats. Select the book, click on the “Convert books” button, select the Output format you want (MOBI for Kindle), and click OK. Once the conversion is done, you’ll be able to take the MOBI file and send it to your Kindle or any other device/app you wish to use.
